When a Tire Needs Replacing Rather Than Repairing

Not every tire problem can be patched. Here's when a new tire is the right call.

Worn Below the Tread Wear Indicators

Every tire has small raised bars moulded into the tread grooves. When the tread wears down to those bars, the tire has reached the legal and safe limit — it needs to be replaced, not repaired.

Sidewall Damage

Cuts, bulges, or bubbles on the sidewall cannot be patched. The sidewall flexes constantly under load, and any structural damage there is a blowout risk. Replacement is the only safe option.

Repeated Punctures in the Same Area

A tire that has been patched multiple times in the same zone may no longer hold a reliable seal. If you're on your second or third repair in the same spot, it's time for a new tire.

Age Cracking

Rubber degrades over time even if the tread looks fine. Visible cracking in the sidewall or tread grooves — especially on tires more than six years old — means the tire should be replaced regardless of remaining tread depth.

Damage Outside the Repairable Tread Area

Industry standards only allow repairs in the central tread zone. Punctures near the shoulder or sidewall, or damage larger than 6mm, fall outside what can safely be repaired — a new tire is required.

How to Find Your Tire Size

Your tire size is printed on the sidewall of every tire. Look for a string like 225/65R17 — the first number is the tread width in millimetres, the second is the aspect ratio (sidewall height as a percentage of width), and the last number is the rim diameter in inches. You can also find the recommended size on the sticker inside your driver's door jamb or in your owner's manual. When you call or book, just read us that number or send a quick photo of the sidewall and we'll take it from there.

New or Used — We Supply Both

We carry new tires in the most common passenger and light truck sizes. If you only need one tire and the others on your car still have plenty of life left, a quality used tire is a practical lower-cost option — we can discuss what makes sense for your situation when you call.
