Flat Tire: Can It Be Repaired or Does It Need Replacing?
You're standing in a parking lot, tire flat, wondering if this is a quick fix or an expensive trip to the shop. The good news: most flat tires can be repaired right where you are — no tow, no shop visit. The bad news: some can't, and driving on the wrong kind of damage makes things worse.
Here's exactly how we assess every flat tire when we arrive at your location.
## The Golden Rule: Location of the Damage
The single most important factor is **where** the puncture is.
**Repairable:** Damage in the central tread area — roughly the middle 75% of the tire's width. This is the zone that contacts the road, and it's thick enough to hold a proper plug-and-patch repair.
**Not repairable:** Damage in the sidewall or shoulder. The sidewall flexes constantly as you drive. A patch there won't hold under that stress, and a failure at highway speed is dangerous. If the nail or screw is in the sidewall, you need a replacement — full stop.
## What We Look for When We Arrive
When an OnSite Tire Toronto technician pulls up to your location, here's the quick assessment we run:
### 1. Size of the Puncture
A nail, screw, or small road debris that creates a hole **6mm (¼ inch) or smaller** in diameter is typically repairable. Larger punctures — from bolts, sharp metal, or impact damage — often can't be sealed reliably.
### 2. Angle of the Puncture
A straight-in puncture is ideal. If the object entered at a steep angle (more than 45 degrees), the internal damage to the tire's structure may be too extensive to repair safely.
### 3. How Long You Drove on It
This is where a lot of drivers make things worse. If you drove even a short distance on a completely flat tire, the sidewall may have folded and cracked internally. What started as a repairable puncture becomes a replacement job. If you notice a flat, **stop immediately** and call us.
### 4. Overall Tire Condition
If the tire is already worn down to the wear indicators (1.6mm tread depth), a repair doesn't make sense — you'd be putting money into a tire that needs replacing anyway. We'll tell you honestly.
## Common Scenarios We See Every Day
**Nail in the tread — most common call we get.** If it's in the centre tread and you haven't driven on it flat, this is almost always a straightforward repair. We plug and patch from the inside, re-inflate, and you're on your way in under 30 minutes.
**Slow leak with no visible object.** Could be a valve stem leak, a bead seal issue, or a very small puncture. We find the source and fix it on the spot.
**Blowout at highway speed.** The tire is usually destroyed — shredded sidewall, structural damage throughout. This is always a replacement. We'll mount your spare or a new tire wherever you are.
**Run-flat tire that's been driven on.** Run-flats are designed to be driven up to 80km at reduced speed after losing pressure. But once you've used that window, the internal structure is often compromised. We assess on-site and advise whether repair is safe.
**Sidewall bulge.** Not a puncture — this is internal structural damage, usually from hitting a pothole or curb. The tire needs to come off immediately. A bulge means the tire could fail without warning.
## The Repair Process: What Actually Happens
A proper tire repair isn't just a plug from the outside. That's a temporary fix. Here's what a permanent repair looks like:
1. **Remove the tire from the rim** — the only way to inspect the inside properly
2. **Inspect the interior** for hidden damage, cracking, or separation
3. **Clean and prepare the puncture area** from the inside
4. **Apply a combination plug-patch** — seals the hole and bonds to the inner liner
5. **Re-mount and inflate** to the correct pressure
6. **Check for leaks** before handing the vehicle back
This is what we do at your location. No shortcuts.
## When You Absolutely Need a New Tire
- Damage in the sidewall or shoulder
- Puncture larger than 6mm
- Multiple punctures close together
- Tire has been driven flat for any distance
- Visible internal damage or cracking
- Tread depth at or below 1.6mm
- Bulge or bubble anywhere on the tire
## What to Do Right Now If You Have a Flat
1. **Don't drive on it.** Even 50 metres on a flat can turn a repair into a replacement.
2. **Call us.** We'll come to your exact location — driveway, parking lot, highway shoulder, wherever you are.
3. **Stay safe.** If you're on a highway, stay in your vehicle with your hazards on until we arrive.
We cover Scarborough, Markham, Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Courtice, Bowmanville, and the broader GTA — 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Most flat tires are fixable. The key is not making them worse before we get there.
